INDEX, Wash. – A kayaker was rescued after he became trapped and nearly drowned Saturday on the North Fork of the Skykomish River near Index, emergency officials said.
A Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said multiple units responded to the scene, about five miles east of Index, at about 1:35 p.m. after receiving a report of a kayaker in trouble.
Two fellow kayakers were able to get the victim onto a gravel bar and performed CPR to revive him.
When rescue teams arrived, they conducted a river crossing to recover the victim and get him to shore to a waiting…..

I’ve heard so many comments since the notification we sent out about Reiter Rd. being opened.
I finally had to see with my own eyes, so I hopped in the ol’ Jeep around 9:30am (about an hour ago) and drove on up. As a matter of fact, I drove ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
There are signs, Road Closed in 3.7 miles, 2.7 miles, Closed Ahead etc; and there are a couple of gates that are open.
Anyway, IT’S OPEN.
A reminder that we plan to do a walk through along the shoreline beginning at 6:30 PM on Monday (14th) evening
We will meet at the east end of town and walk westerly along Ave A
please feel free to let others who might be interested know about the walk
The goal of the walk will be to discuss physical conditions of the shoreline, help each other better understand the shoreline locations on the ground, and look at the areas I will be proposing as possible mitigation locations (should those piles of money ever get released).
I encourage you all to think about questions for the process but urge you to remember:
primarily the restrictions of the shoreline master plan are for NEW development, Major redevelopment, and development which is NOT single family residential
Depending on how much time we spend on the walk, we will meet back at the Old Fire Hall after the walk to discuss any overall concerns with the recent materials
I have received comment and questions over the past 2 months; thanks for taking the time to read and wonder
My goal will be to issue the remaining chapters this month as well as start sending out what will be billed as the DRAFT chapters at the end of May and into June
attached are two maps to print out for the walk in case you want to make notes
the legal size pdf should be printed on legal sized paper, the other is fit for letter size
both are in landscape layout
if you have questions which you have not sent in please remember to do that
thanks
Kim Peterson

SULTAN — A $4.9 million roundabout is expected to open for traffic today along U.S. 2 at Rice Road.
The highway has been closed to a single lane since Sunday while crews built the roundabout, the first one on the highway in Snohomish County.
Originally, the Department of Transportation believed the work could cause 90-minute delays and miles of backups. Instead, it only caused 20-minute delays during rush hour at the beginning of the week.
“The drivers took our advice and found another routes,” Transportation spokeswoman Meghan Pembroke said.
It also helped that the Stevens Pass ski. . .

Comment from David:
As you probably know we, here, in Index, rely on a service, sponsored by
the Sno-Isle Library system, to bring us books, videos and other educational resources, called
the Bookmobile. I have been a patron for many years and to celebrate
National Bookmobile Day, yes, there is such a thing, the mobile librarians
(aka “The Bookmobile Babes”. I’m not being sexist. It is a fact.) asked
the Index patrons (we are their favorite stop) to participate in a video
titled Why We Love Our Bookmobile. This was a nationwide program to film
bookmobile patrons around the country touting the praises of their
bookmobile. I just have to say, after viewing some of the other videos
posted on youtube, that ours, far and away, surpasses any other efforts.
The production values alone are far superior, and the talent, well, let me
just say that the talent merits mention. Is that an Oscar I smell?
We have taken the liberty to post the video in our Forums. You can view the vid HERE. It that does not work, try http://indexwa.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=158&t=1270
Work on roundabout in Sultan delayed
SULTAN — Bad weather made the Washington State Department of Transportation postpone construction of a roundabout on U.S. 2.
Now, the DOT is planning to narrow the highway to one lane starting at 7 p.m. April 8 until 6 a.m. April 13 on Rice Road, east of Sultan.
“We hope to get it done in April before summer travel picks up,” spokeswoman Meghan Pembroke said.
Crews are set to work on a 1,600-foot stretch which would cause significant backups and 90-minute delays. About 14,000 vehicles….
