Seeking an Answer to a Question

In your opinion, what constitutes a Garage Sale?

My problem is, there is somebody on the block whom has a Garage Sale 7 days a week for the past couple of months.

At some point in time, should it not be construed as a business and therefore be required to get a business license from the Town and pay taxes to the town on the sales?

Maybe I’m being nit-picky but it just does not seem right. In my frame of thought, it’s a business if it’s doors are open 7 days a week all year long.

DST – Fall Back

At 2am this morning we were to turn our clocks back an hour. Just a reminder. :)

Talk of new dam on Skykomish above falls resisted | HeraldNet.com – Local news

By Bill Sheets, Herald Writer

INDEX — Just as the Snohomish County PUD has finished building its first mini-dam, it’s encountering resistance to the possibility of another.

Less than three weeks ago, the utility flipped the switch to allow power to flow from its new $29 million, mini-dam project on Youngs Creek south of Sultan. Now, the Public Utility District has applied for federal permits to study building a mini-dam and powerhouse above Sunset Falls on the south fork of the Skykomish River near Index. About 300…

Email From Visitor Amy

Just received this email this morning (un-edited):
——

I was looking for more information about Troublesome Creek Campground (which is my favorite) and was getting very frustrated that the road hasn’t been repaired yet…until I saw a link to your blog! Index is my favorite town in the entire world…I have been known to drive from Lakewood, WA to Index just to cross the bridge and take in the scenery. Index is special for so many reasons, but as I tell people all the time: you’re surrounded on 3 sides by mountains and right on a river – how could that not be perfect?! I just wanted to tell you how much I love your town. :) I’m originally from Upstate, NY (near Cooperstown/Ithaca).

East Coast Earthquake Update

BREAKING NEWS: President Obama has just confirmed that the DC earthquake occurred on a rare and obscure fault-line, apparently known as “Bush’s Fault”. Obama also announced that the Secret Service and Maxine Waters continues an investigation of the quake’s suspicious ties to the Tea Party.

Conservatives however have proven that it was caused by the founding fathers all rolling over in their graves…!

Email From a Reader

The following email came from Mary B. to our inbox (unedited). Thank you Mary.

FYI -I contacted the Washington Department of transportation about the lengthy slow downs on highway 2 due to the traffic lights in Sultan. Mike Swires at 206 440-4415 was very helpful in explaining the issues that impact the length of the green lights there. Said not many people had contacted him with positive suggestions such as a reader board with anticipated wait time. Anyway, I figured I wasn’t the only one of your readers that has experienced recent hour plus delays trying to get from Index to Monroe.

Paradox of Our Times

Today, we have bigger houses and smaller families;
More conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less common sense;
More knowledge, but less judgment.
We have more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.
We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast,
Get to angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired,
Read too little, watch TV too often, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too little and lie too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life;
We’ve added years to life, not life to years.
We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers;
Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.
We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space.
We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice;
We write more, but learn less; plan more, but accomplish less.
We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait;
We have higher incomes, but lower morals.
We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies, but have less communication.
We are long on quantity, but short on quality.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men and short character; steep profits and shallow relationships.
More leisure and less fun; More kinds of food, but less nutrition;
Two incomes, but more divorce; Fancier houses, but broken homes.
This is the paradox of our times today.
That’s why I propose, that as of today, you do not keep anything for a special occasion, because every day that you live is a special occasion.
Search for knowledge, read more, sit on your front porch and admire the view without paying attention to your needs.
Spend more time with your family and friends, eat your favorite foods, and visit the places you love.
Life is a chain of moment of enjoyment, not only about survival.
Use your crystal goblets. Do not save your best perfume, and use it every time you feel you want it.
Remove from your vocabulary phrases like “one of these days” and “someday”. Let’s write that letter we thought of writing “one of these days”.
Let’s tell our families and friends how much we love them.
Do not delay anything that adds laughter and joy to your life.

AOHELL (AOL)

It appears that our Newsletters and News As it Happens are all bouncing back to us from AOL.

If you are a subscriber and your ISP is AOL, please check your spam filters or let AOL know that indexwa.org is not a spammer.

The only other measure we have is to delete AOL subscribers. Other, much larger newsletter databases have the same issue, such as Randy Cassingham’s This is True.

If our newsletter was hurting us financially, we’d step in for you however, it’s a free newsletter so we are leaving this up to you, our readers.

Thanks and we are sorry for the issue(s) you are having.

Photos: Index Arts Festival 2011

It was a long day for us but we enjoyed our selves as did many hundreds of folks at the Arts Festival.  Yvonne pulled it off once again.  Many thanks Yvonne for working so hard all year long on this project.

Furthermore, the idiot that I am, I did not make it through the whole grounds of the festival and missed plenty of photo opportunities.  There are some vendors and wares to view and a couple of musicians, but I blew it really.  We could not stay until closing as happened last year.  We had guests from out of town (family) and family comes first.

The photos we did shoot, we sincerely hope you enjoy and accept our apologies if you will.

More on The Humming Birds

We just wanted to share this story.

We had pretty much a breeding ground here for humming birds this year. As the female only lays 2 eggs per season, we had about 10 (this includes two adults) of them feeding here and living in a bush right near our deck.

It appears mom and dad left about 2 weeks ago leaving us with about 8 young ones to feed and boy DID THEY FEED. A rowdy bunch they were.

In the past week they all left but in one day, three returned and are still here. They’ve grown into the juvenile adult stage now.

What I wanted to share with you is this:

There is one humming bird in particular that flies right up to my face (8″ to 12″ away) every single day as if to greet me. She cocks her head a bit and stares at me in flight. She has no fear of me at all. I think out of all of them, she has figured out who feeds the brood. This has been happening now for about 5 days, a ritual morning greeting.

I think it’s pretty special and “cool” that such a delicate creature has put her trust in me and has no fear of me.
