Index Galena Question Submitted By Stevie

  • Q. Is the road that runs by the river with all of the camping
spots still closed? It’s my favorite place to unwind and I was VERY disappointed last year when I found out it was.
  • A. Well Stevie, you are talking to a rookie here however, I may be able to answer this question BUT will leave it open for comments in the very likely event I am an idiot and don’t know what I am talking about.

Sorry to inform you but YES, Index Gelena Road is still closed about 6 miles up (as of this writing). HOWEVER, if you drive HWY 2 up past Skykomish there is a turnoff to the left about 1/4 or so up the road. It is a paved road and turns into a dirt road after a mile or more. SOME of those roads are still open. You can head straight through until it T’s. Take the left and it brings you onto the road you are looking for and into the State Park. I don’t know for sure if that is open as some of the roads up in there were washed out too and there could be some snow in there at the moment also.

Best thing to do is call the Ranger Station just outside of Skykomish (Skykomish Ranger Station at 360-677-2414). They will have info for you AND it would do you good to purchase a Topo Map if you venture up in the hills the back way. You can get lost up there if you don’t know your way around.

Question From Bob F.

  • Q. Undoubtedly you have been asked before but, what is the origin of the name of “Bush House”? Family name? Was it an early reference to it’s location?
    Very curious about it.
  • A. Thanks Bob. As I am relatively new to this area (only been here for 5+ years), I had to direct this right to the President of The Index Historical Society, David Cameron, PhD.

The Hotel was first owned by Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Bush, thus the name. But on closer examination in the 1916 Polks Directory, Mr. Cameron discovered at that time only Mrs. Ella Bush is listed, so her husband, Clarence may have been deceased at the time.

Thanks to Louise Lindgren and David Cameron for their assistance on this answer.
