Heybrook Story in Seattle Times Today

Story in the local section of today’s Seattle Times:  ”Heybrook Saved from
Clear-Cutting”.

This refers  to the campaign to save Heybrook Ridge, above the town of
Index, WA, from clear-cutting, to which many indexers contributed.  The
Friends of Heybrook Ridge raised $550,000, the Snohomish County Council is
kicking in $700,000, and the group will be able to save the ridge.  Here’s
the pertinent paragraph near the end:

“Money poured in from all over, in amounts small and large. The most dogged
were the indexers – professional book-index compilers, who took the town’s
name to heart, and sent in checks from around the globe to save the trees.
The farthest postmark was from Egypt.”

“I guess sometimes it’s nice having a screwball name like Index,” Cameron
said.
