Odd Photo of The Wall

For the past few months we have been looking at this particular spot on the wall. Maybe our imagination has run wild on us BUT it almost looks like a Native American Carving in the granite. It appears to be a head?

Now we know it is not carved and is an act of nature but none the less “it’s pretty cool”. Take a look below. We have added documentation to the last photo in the event you don’t see what we see.

This just in from David Cameron. A photo will follow soon.
“Betty Johnson said the old timers and she always called it “Alley Oop,” named for the cartoon character cave man with a face somewhat like that. It’s natural. Artist Tim Howell once pointed out to me a ridge line feature to the north of Gunn’s Peak which looks like the head and snout of a German shepherd dog when the sun is right or the snow emphasized it. This feature looks right, to the south, and is just to the upper right of Tom Thumb. Check it out too! Native people didn’t go in for such massive rock carving as the “face,” by the way.

Tom Thumb is the stand-alone tall hump on the south side of the river east of town and lower than the summit ridge behind it. It has a huge light colored scar of rock due to a major breaking away and collapse of part of the face a few years ago. Access is a long walk up the gated Bitter Creek Road off the Index-Galena.

Yet another comment submitted to us via email from Sharoooooo….
Ed, that is the “sentinel” who watches over Index. If you look further at the face and come down from there, you will see to his waste and he has an arm (left if you’re facing it he has it extended and bent at the elbow, and he is holding a spear of sorts.

Well it’s obvious to me that you guys need to finish this carving. It looks like – huh something human. Finish the carving and make up a history to go along with it. lol. Regards, Thom

Regarding the face on the Index Wall. We have a lot east of Index and noticed that, from our perspective, there is an image on the rock face of the Thumb on Gunns Peaks. It wasn’t there in 2008, but there was obviously a rock slide that took place either Winter, Fall or early Summer of 2009. We think it looks just like a Salmon going up river.

I am so happy someone has an Index blog. Very wonderful to be able to keep up on events while slaving down here in the hinterlands.
