Redman Hall Collapses

On January 1, 2009, either in the evening or early morning hours of the January 2nd, Redman Hall collapsed under the weight of the snow.  The Bush House may be next.  Below are photos before and after of Redman Hall and a current photo of  The Bush House.  (JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE FD.  THE INCIDENT HAPPENED JAN. 1, LATE NIGHT).

    Wow….

Glad no one was in there!

Yes, I agree glad no one was inside.
    That is horrible!
    Will this be rebuilt?

-Webmaster- I seriously doubt it will be rebuilt. It was not inhabitable and has not been for years. It is quite a historical landmark in our town though.

Wow, it really affected me to see that the old building had collapsed. Even though it wasn’t inhabited, it was a well known structure around town. The Bush House is looking very unstable as well. It is sad!!

I’ve been hearing about different events that took place in the Redman Hall when it was in it’s prime.
I would love to hear more…

I lived in Index until I was ten years old. I am now 59. My grandparents on both sides had their golden wedding anniversaries in the Redmond Hall. My mom and grandma were members of the Pocahontas Lodge. I have many fond memories of bingo games and all of the wonderful people. My Uncle Wes and Aunt Hazel Smith lived in Index for many decades and also had their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the Hall. I am so sad to see the pictures. Definitely the end of an era. I am also sorry that some historical society did not help keep it structurally sound so this could not happen. My Grandpa Smith did a lot of the work on that building also.

I am so sorry to see that Redmond Hall Collapsed. There was lots of history in that old building. My Grandparents (Nana and Baupie Dayment) had their 50th anniversery party in the hall. I can remember as a child the parties and dances there. I have many many memories of it as we only lived 3 houses down form there.

Redman Hall was owned by a private party in the end. Therfore the upkeep was on the downside.

What a shame that the private owner of the Redman Hall let that much history collapse. I hope who ever owns the Bush House has more interest but from the looks of the picture it doesnt seem so.

The Bush House, to my understanding, is owned by one of the Nordstroms. A daughter or grand-daugther (she is elderly). I could be wrong on this and do not mind being corrected. The house next door to the Bush House was also owned by her, but that sold to another party a year or two ago and the new owners are sprucing it up. We don’t know what will happen to the Bush House. We do know that it needs a LOT of work since the big earthquake years back that ruined the foundation on the back side of the hotel.

Oh well I guess you can say a treasure to several generations can be considered another persons land investment. What a shame. There are many grants available for restoration. In fact we are about to save a house here in Smith River that was built in 1887. We are having it moved to a different location to be used as a museum. Its amazing what a small community can do when it pulls together and cares.
