SULTAN — A controversial shooting range might wind up in the line of fire on Wednesday.The Snohomish County Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing to discuss turning an east county gravel pit into a no-shooting area at the request of neighbors.

INDEX — Things are looking up for a world-famous climbing destination that appeared in danger of closing to the public just a few months ago.
Fundraising for the Lower Index Town Wall enjoys strong momentum, said Jonah Harrison of the Washington Climbers Coalition. More encouraging news arrived last month, when Snohomish County set aside money to buy the 23-acre site from a private owner, in case climbers can’t raise the money themselves.

INDEX — U.S. Forest Service officials met with a gun club president on Friday afternoon to set the rules that would allow a trap shooting range to reopen.The Index Sportsmen Club was told the club could continue using public land for the range if it meets several conditions.Those could cost the club $30,000 to $50,000.

SULTAN — An Everett man who was kicked out of the Dutch Cup Restaurant in Sultan early Saturday for starting fights got into his car and tried to run over several people in the parking lot, police say.
Five people were taken to the hospital and the man, 23, went to jail.

Propane tank explodes in Index camper arson

INDEX — Investigators believe a propane tank blew up during a fire Monday night near Index that destroyed three campers.
“It’s definitely an arson,” said Bruce Pulver, a fire investigator with the Snohomish County Fire Marshals Office.
The blaze was reported about 9:30 p.m. in the 4900 block of Mount Index River Road, Pulver said.
Index fire crews responded and doused the fire that destroyed a fifth-wheel trailer, a motor home and a cab-over camper.

INDEX — The river’s roar is getting louder.
Some homeowners worry that the North Fork Skykomish River could wash them away by fall or winter.
Because the water isn’t threatening any public buildings or roads, they’ve been having a hard time getting government help. They don’t have enough money to do expensive work themselves.

GOLD BAR — Heads up off-road riders.
Hundreds of acres in the Reiter Foothills area are now closed to motorized vehicles.
All trails north of May Creek and south of the Deer Creek crossings are closed.
Trails in a small area north and west of Hogarty Creek also will be closed July 15.
The Department of Natural Resources is in the final stages of bringing some order to the 10,000-acre forest known as Reiter Foothills. Outdoor enthusiasts come from near and far to use thousands of forested acres stretching from Sultan to Index.
