MONROE — Rock blasting on Highway 522 will be delayed.
The Washington State Department of Transportation had planned to do a series of closures in November to widen lanes on Highway 522. It’s part of a $159.7 million project to prevent head-on collisions on the highway.
The blasting has now been postponed until spring, when the weather is drier, DOT spokeswoman Bronlea Mishler said.
With less rain, Scarsella Brothers Inc. of Kirkland can have more control over erosion and reduce pollution in the……

The hope of generating geothermal power in Snohomish County could take a giant leap forward in the next few months.
Or, it could send the Snohomish County Public Utility District back to the drawing board.
The PUD in the next couple of weeks plans to begin drilling an exploratory well for geothermal power.
The PUD will drill a hole nearly a mile into the earth in the Cascades and send down a special thermometer to test the water temperature, said Craig Collar, senior manager for energy resource development for the PUD.
Geothermal power is created when steam, heat or hot water from underground reservoirs is used to spin turbine generators. The water is heated by magma farther below.
If the PUD is able to develop geothermal power, it would be the first utility in the state to do so, officials have said. Geothermal plants are operating elsewhere in the nation, including California, Idaho and Nevada.
The hope is that geothermal electricity could potentially power up to 35,000 homes in Snohomish County by 2020.
The drilling will be done about 15 miles north of Skykomish. The site formerly was accessible on the Index-Galena Road, ………

The County Planning Commision recommends easing stormwater regulations for trails, but some worry about damage to surrounding aquifers and streams.
INDEX — Forest trails at the state’s Reiter Foothills and other out-of-the way recreation spots are subject to some of the same water runoff rules as suburban neighborhoods.
Some county leaders want to change that by easing stormwater regulations for trail building. That would cut down on expensive and unnecessary permitting, the reasoning goes.
Members of the environmental community, however, fear the rollback would endanger streams at Reiter and an aquifer serving…..

Toll US 2? You’ve got to be kidding?? No??? (Vox)
Rebecca Pedersen of Everett writes: U.S. 2 is a nightmare! Seriously, only two lanes? All it takes is one driver traveling at an inconsistent speed to create a logjam of vehicles that turns into a high-speed frenzy at the rare passing lane. And that’s before reaching those ridiculous variable speed zones between all those little towns.
Is the state at all open to the notion of a four-lane highway? Personally,……….
